What is School Community Service?

Community service is a mandatory part of Veritas and runs parallel to the educational program, although it is not formally evaluated by external parties associated with Veritas Collegiate Academy Budapest. Community service takes place outside of class hours, with varying frequency, either after school or on weekends, so as not to interfere with daytime education. Its ultimate goal is to promote self-discovery, reflection, and openness, which are values defined by Veritas Collegiate Academy Budapest.

How many hours are required? (differences)

The specific regulations governing community service at our school differ from those in the Hungarian system. They are stricter in terms of the number of hours, but more flexible in terms of activities. Students must complete at least 80 hours each year and document them appropriately, which amounts to a total of 320 hours in the fourth year at Veritas. Students may lose the opportunity to obtain their certificate if they do not complete the required number of hours.

The formal branch of Community Service

The formal branch was created to maintain consistency and accountability. It encourages cooperation with organizations and the establishment of relationships not only between institutions but also between individuals. This includes all community service programs organized by the school, the sponsor, or any of their nonprofit partners or partner institutions. Examples include: a day at the local animal shelter, delivering supplies to impoverished communities or families, media projects, making Christmas gifts for disadvantaged children, feeding the homeless, church service assistance, etc.

The informal branch of Community Service

The informal branch was created to strike a balance between the relative strictness of the formal branch and a renewed focus on personal development and exploring areas of interest. It covers any activity organized by an individual or group that requires a certain number of hours. Examples include: participating in a new sport, going on an excursion or short hike, making a video or short film project, poetry or any other form of creative writing, creating a work of art, etc.
